If you're having problems with your computer or think you are, post here. As I normally go around and fix furs computers when they post problems, I thought this would be a bit easier.
We'll see how it runs. It's kinda like the "Coming and Going thread" only computer problems! :)
Please, only computer problems, no conversations unless we're speaking about the computer issue you are having!

Ahoy there.
Well, Internet Explorer won't open for starters. I even tried to run the task in the ctrl+alt+delete window thingie and it popped up for a split second and dissappeared. Really frustrating. >.o Control panel and some other folders won't open either, and I'm having to use MSN explorer to get on here. Any idea what might be wrong?
I appreciate your input in trying to help fellow furry brothas out n' whatnot. ^^

Internet Explorer fix:
Open up any folder and go to Tools > Folder Options. After doing that, go to the View tab and down just a bit you'll see "Hidden Files and Folders" click the radio button to show the Hidden Files and Folders. Click OK.
Download Adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/)
Download Ewido (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
Download ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp)
Download those, boot in safe mode and run those in safe mode. It may take up to an hour, but they work.
After you run those in safe mode, boot up in regular mode and give IE another try.
If the problem still persists, download Hijackthis (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html) and run that, scan and copy/paste your log to a PM window to me.
If we still have problems from there, I know another fix, but it includes in editting your registry files; I'll walk you through that after all those steps.

That would not freeze your PC up if you did the instructions correctly. Make sure you did them correctly.
If you did, then I would advise you to look for a free version of a anti-virus program. A lot of them are out there.
Free Norton trial. (http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/sat2/ec_Main.Entry17C?SID=49997&SP=10023&CID=0&PID=764793&PN=61&V1=764793&V2=&V3=&V4=&V5=31040595&CUR=840&DSP=&PGRP=0&API1=65&API2=GOOGLE&API3=inc_free_antivirus_scan_exa&API4=Google&API5=www.google.com&ABCODE=&CACHE_ID=0)
Run that, then send me a Hijackthis log. The link to Hijack this and instructins are in the post above (my post).

Need more info then that; however, I think your issue is that you're running a pirated version of windows - If you are not, go to the windows update page and try to update; it'll make you validate your windows program - Also a good way to see if it's a pirated version or not.

You can't access your "My Documents" folder because you are not the same user as you were before (before the reinstallation of Windows). This is actually a quite common mistake people make, unfortunately.
How to take ownership of a folder:
Note: You must be logged on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab.
If you are using Windows XP Professional, you must disable Simple File Sharing. By default, Windows XP Professional uses Simple File sharing when it is not joined to a domain.
To disable Simple File Sharing:
1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
3. In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
4. Click OK.
NEXT YOU NEED TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THE FOLDER.
To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:
1. Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
3. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
4. In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
5. Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message: You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?
All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.
6. Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.
If you want to erase everything, bootup from your windows CD and format the partition. If you don't know how to do that you should find someone near you who does =)

Most laptop video cards are one piece with the motherboard and cannot be upgraded. Also, LCD panels are lit by a florescent tube. If you can't see it, and there's no controls to control the brightness, it's likely that the light source burned out.

So I think that the issue was that the HD was dying. I bought a nice 7200rpm 60 gig one, installed it... then realized that hey, silly Windows, downloading ethernet drivers from the internet doesn't work so well. So I went to boot my desktop.. and the fscking thing won't even POST! After some diagnosticing and swearing, I think it's one of the RAM chips. So I bought a new one and am limping along on 512mb for now. Fortunately, Crucial seems to have a lifetime warranty, so let's see if they honor it for this fried chip..

Ok here is my problem...
I'm running an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (Clawhammer). I should be getting 2.2 GHz from it, but it's only clocking at 1.8 GHz. I'm losing .4 GHz somewhere.
I have 1 gig of RAM, and I've heard from a few other people that they had similar problems where when they ran more than 512 megs of RAM, they lost about .4 GHz of their processor clock speed.
I tried overclocking, but I cannot because my ASUSTek Salmon motherboard does not support it, so the option is not even available in the BIOS. It's currently running at x9 multiplyer.
I'm not sure what else to try to boost the clock speed back up to the CPU's max capability. This .4 GHz is really killing me, especially with gaming.

What socket, 939 or 754?
I run one Athlon 64 3400+ socket 754 newcastle in my cube, used to have a 939 clawhammer. Both are great chips.
I would suggest trying a BIOS upgrade BUT BE WARNED, you can cook your mothboard if you dont do the upgrade properly.
Mine runs at 2.65GHZ and a 12 multiplier with a 220 mhz FSB.
Yours should be a 11x multiplier, 200x11 = 2200MHZ or 2.2 GHZ
200 is your front side bus.
Either try a new bios, manually setting your multiplier, or perhaps your motherboard cannot support your processor...
Rrruff
July 28th, 2006, 11:02 AM
BIOS upgrade should do the trick like Morgan said - but it could lead to other problems...
I don't believe your computer is running slower, it could be just that it reads wrong- hence the BIOS update. So you can take the chance and update the BIOS and see if it may or may not cook your mobo (probably not, but it's still something you need to be notified out), or just leave it and pretend it says what it should be running at =)
Khaz, I don't know much about drawing and photoshop stuff, but I imagine I can help if I took a few moments into it.

Check the bus speed of cpu and memory, it may be sync-locked, ie: the CPU bus speed and the memory bus speed, locked both to the same value/speed, or a multiple thereof.
Khaz: in what program? PhotoShop? The Gimp? Paint Shop Pro?
In photoshop, it's simple as creaing a new layer and deleting the background layer (background layer is locked to an opaque colour) or creating a new file with transparent background, then file->save for web, choose gif and tick transparency option.

I have no idea how to do it in Corel Photo-Paint, and its not free, so I cant just go and download it.
So I'll tell you how to do it in The GIMP which I recommend you download, there's a mod of The GIMP called GIMPShop, same functionality, but it makes the UI exactly like PhotoShop almost, it's 7.4MB to download, completely 100% free ^_^

I figured out the problem with my processor... Indeed the AMD Cool&Quiet system was dropping the multiplyer to x9 when not under load, and increases it to x11 when under load. I did some tests under different conditions in order to figure this out.

GIFs only have 1 bit of transparency for each pixel, it's either on or off, there is no partial transparency, if it has a white fringe, like my avatar, it will look good on a white background, you're going to need to optimise it for the background colour/picture its going to be used on, otherwise it'll have a fringe or hard edges.
So you may as well use JPEG, and include the background colour or picture on a layer behind the image in your image program and save it as a JPEG.
However, there is an ideal solution for you.
There is a graphics format called PNG (it's a lossless format too), it's an old format, all browsers will support it, it was developed in 1995, old browsers support it too, but also due to - "PNG is now an International Standard (ISO/IEC 15948:2003), also released as a W3C Recommendation on November 10, 2003. This version of PNG differs only slightly from version 1.2 and adds no new chunks."
PNG has multiple colour formats you can use, there is Indexed Colour (256 colours, just like GIF), RGB (both 24-bit and 48-bit colour(, Greyscale, and also supports a proper alpha channel for varying levels of transparency
Notes: "Versions of Internet Explorer up to 6 do not support native alpha-channel transparency (although a JavaScript fix is possible for clients using IE 5.5 to 6)." <-- only supports one single bit transparency like GIF, but there is a script fix for it ( http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bobosola/pnghowto.htm ) then it'll work a charm.
"Although still in beta, Internet Explorer 7 supports PNG transparency."
Then there is JNG, which is PNG, with support for alpha transparencies but has JPEG/JFIF compression (lossy), which is great for say photographic images in RGB colour that you've say added effects on and want parts partially transparent etc.

First problem: this is on a specifically textured background, and I don't think I can make it work for all cases. The icon and the background may not be perfectly juxtaposed in all resolutions, etc... Besides, it's a huge hassle if I want to change the thing, and all that. I would like to know how to make it work normally.
You say "optimize it". How do you mean?
However, there is an ideal solution for you.
For some reason, I have a recent version of IE, but a transparent .png doesn't seem to work for me. I just see a solid block of whatever colour...

if you view the straight png you made it wont, if you view it in a web page pasted with that script shown in the link, then it will.
IE has never been a W3C compliant browser, MS refuse to fix the bugs... it also has placement bugs etc...
well optimise simply put, the edge should gradiate to the background colour/image around it before becoming transparent.
I forgot to mention Flash also support varying degrees of transparency, and can have a transparent (invisible) background - http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14201

Alright, here's the deal:
I'm asking this because I have a site and I'm at the moment designing a (simple) logo for it. Now you see, I don't have much control over things in this case, I can't change the programming of the page so far as I know, and if I could I wouldn't know where to start. All I can really do with this one detail is just throw the picture in.
And if putting a transparent .png file there doesn't work for me, then it won't work for some other people, and that's a bad thing.
Now .gif files work, I just need to try to make it work smoothly. Heck, the default logo is a .gif file, it's all curvy and such, but the edges are perfectly smooth. I want to know how they did that...

Bootup from your windows CD (If you don't know how to do that, I'll post a detailed explanations later).
Once you do that, you can select to delete a partition; choose that one partition and you're set!
There are other ways, but you need programs to do that-- Perhaps Riddle/Morgan can suggest a free one - I think PartitionMagic is free, are there any others?

Here's my questionessicityliness.
I learned my computer skills on XP Professional. It had things such as Word (not WordPad) and Excel. My XP Home does not. I was wondering if I would have to just buy Professional, or if there was some sort of software I could download/buy and install for Home.
If I have to get Professional, what's the differences XP Professional and XP Home as far as other applications go?

for microsoft word, you have to do one of 2 things
buy microsoft office 2003 and get all their stuff with it, or go to the internet and search for each thing.
it would help if you named all the stuff

There are a number of free office software suites (office software, in general, refers to programs like word processors, spreadsheet programs, presentation programs, and so on, that you'd use in an office environment. Microsoft Office, in specific, refers to MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, MS Outlook, MS Publisher, and so on).
OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/) is free and has some features that MS Office doesn't have (such as Print directly to a PDF).. but at the same time, it also lacks a lot of features that Office has, and I couldn't stand using it.
One thing you should definately ask - if you're a student, Microsoft often offers very heavy discounts for software. Also, some businesses will let you buy software for very cheap through them. For instance, when I was a student, I was able to purchase Windows XP, MS Office, Visual Studio, and one other program (I forget which) for under $100. The AF has a deal where you can get MS Office for $20. Ask your IT department or Help Desk if they know about it.

A brat that shall remain nameless did something to my computer; I think he deleted some of my programs. WordPad, Paint, and Character Map are no longer accessible.
An error I received:

That's not too bad... just go to add remove programs, then choose Windows Components and reinstall off of the CD.
If not, I can send ya those files (they're very small) and you can just put them in your start folder.

I have noticed by looking through the Disc Cleanup that they were removed with the View Files and then indiviually deleted that way, I think. Outlook is gone (not that I used it) and all my Java games stuff from Pogo is gone as well. The only thing left there is Shockwave ActiveX Control; even Flash MediaPlayer is gone...
EDIT: And my custom security level has been tampered with, but I can't remember all I had it set to before. I just know it's not the same.

Ok here's one for you. I restarted my machine this morning and now I can't sign into MSN, which I could before.
However, I can access Windows Messenger and MSN Web Messenger without issue. MSN tries to sign in but never makes it - it just keeps trying until I cancel it.
I've checked online and there are no service down issues, I've restarted the router and reinstalled MSN to no avail. I've used it's own net troubleshooter which tells me all is performing swimmingly. So, any ideas? And is/has anyone else suffered from the same issue?

KAY SO! I'm selling my laptop...
I currently have two none genuine installations of windows XP professional on it. I tried removing the second installation of windowx XP pro, and now whenever I choose it upon startup, my laptop crashes. When I select the other XP pro... it's fine. It's pretty random.
So I have a copy of windows XP home... genuine... and the CD key.
What I'd like to know is... how to remove both installations of XP pro, and then install windows XP again... because I'm being told that it can't be installed when XP pro is on your system.

Isn't that something about Windows MP and winamp etc not releasing the memory they chew meaning that the longer you use them, the more memory they block and the slower your machine begins to run?
Well someone told me that a long while back when I had a similar problem - cured when I got more RAM.
Chain_Wolf
November 24th, 2006, 02:08 PM
Ah, no. I don't think so anyway. I can leave Windows Media Player or Winamp running all day and all night long. I don't have a ton of RAM either.
I'd suggest seeing if there is an updated driver available for your soundcard first of all. Secondly, I'd close any unused background processes that are running before you use Winamp or WMP, just to free up some extra system resources.
Just for the hell of it you might also want to clean up your hard drive. (I recommend finding Easy Cleaner, it's a free little program that does a decent job.) And then running a disk defrag.

I would try CCleaner for those files too.. http://www.ccleaner.com/ it's free and works great. Watch out,t hey added google tollbar to the downloader.
As far as those files, if you cant find what is using them, restart, and start hitting F5 right after the BIOS post, boot into safemode, and try it then. let me know!

Is it just IE that has a problem connecting along with Limewire, and I-tunes.
What I would do is the following:
Go into your network connections, then right click on the connection that you are using to connect to the internet, then click properties on the list of options, a window should come up, and have a white box with 3 or more items listed depending on the connection you are using, click on the item that says, 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click on the properties button beneath the white box, another window should come up with two tabs General, and alternate configuration, under general make sure that only the 'Obtain An Ip Address Automatically', and 'Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically' is selected. Then go and click on the Alternate Configuration tab, and make sure that 'Automatic Private Ip Address' then click ok.
Also if you have one or more people in your household, or if you are leeching off of someone else, they may have had it where they have disabled the type of connection you are using, SBC has options like those. Also, if you are using wireless, the person can deny you access, by blocking your IP.
Thats all I can suggest.

Simple enough question- I have a single ethernet cable leading into my room. I have both an xbox and a PC that require an ethernet cable when I want to use them. Its a pain when I want to play Xbox Live and have to keep swapping the cable.
Is there anyway I can make this single cable into two? Can i buy a kind of "splitter" meaning I can play both my xbox and check my emails at the same time?

A network switch OR hub work by sending data over a network to its appropriate location. a hub works by sending the data to every location within the network, while a a switch is intelligent and looks at where the data is being sent and only sends it there. with both of them you can use all the ports on he switch at once. if you have a 4 port switch/hub you can use them all at once.
though keep in mind that you can only link a certain amount of switches in a row before you will cause some rather nasty issues withing the network.

The print quality is supurb, but right after the instalation finished, my modem died. I've tried resetting it, restarting my computer, etc., and nothing seems to work. The modem will turn on, but it can't find a connection. The "recieve" light just keeps blinking. Also, my computer doesn't see a gateway server anywhere.
Two misc. pieces of information: I'm running my modem from a USB2.0 cord, because my ethernet controller is ... well ... nobody's sure what's wrong with it. Also, my ISP is Comcast.
So, is my modem fried? Or, could it possibly be a problem with my computer setup?

I am guesing the printer is usb also. Have you tried going into device manager and deleting the modem from the system then redetecting it? This will usually fix configuration problems and reload drivers if there is a conflict. Of course a $15 10/100 Ethernet card in the PC might be worth it long run either way if on board one died. If all the connect/status lights are normal on modem and you have not had any bad storms/power surges I am led to think Microsoft is being the Bitch it is.

It's an iMedia Sh1t3
You want to upgrade? Need a better Power Supply? Hard luck, you have to buy Official Pacard Bell parts.

Do they MAKE Packard 500w power supplies?
Hell no.
Could the scrap-quality motherboard cope anyway?
You're never going to find out coz the main power connection is ONLY made by Packard, and there are NO adapters.
Now THAT is a bloody computer problem.

It actually wasn't my system at all. Comcast sent a technician over today to fix something on our telephone pole. Everything worked fine after that :)
I don't understand... our TV services worked fine... but not the internet... The world is a confusing place. Fortunately, it's now a functional one.

If the Receiving button is flashing, that means it's an ISP issue, if the sending button blinks instead of the receiving one, that means your modem is fucked :) Just an FYI~~
PB's were not too bad back in their day ;) But I agree. They serve a better purpose along-side of apple computers as paper weights. :-P

How exactly do you redirect files? And I've heard of using this or something similar to make files 'invisible' on your desktop. I can hide files inside .jpegs, but I'd like to know this other 'hidden file' technique.
Any help on this is appreciated.

yes, Linux is my top choice. It won't be a gaming PC though, but a straight gaming system, like a nintendo. I want linux cause i hear it works well with Blender, witch is what will be used to make the games. I do suppose it would be a smart idea to find someone who knows how to program linux to make the OS specifically for my game system though. I don't know how hard that would be though O.o

My laptop which is a Microsoft XP or something like that is having a continuous issue. I'll try and describe it with as much detail as I can. Basically I'll be doing my normal business on it such as typing up a essay, looking up yiff, or playing a video game and suddenly the screen goes black and then turns blue with words on it. It says a error has occurred and that I need to restart the computer and if it happens again go to a specialist. Eventually it did it to where when I restarted the computer the blue screen popped up automatically with the same message saying it had to delete something in the mainframe and it wouldn't load up Windows. I took it to best buy and after paying bucks for them to fix it they told me that if I had Vista this wouldn't have happened. My computer is starting to do it again and so is my main computer which is a Gateway. What is this? Is this a virus and if so, why would Vista fix it? Should I upgrade to Vista even though I hear it sucks? Sorry if I don't have as much detail as I should. Next time it happens I'll copy the exact words as to what the blue screen says.

Hmmm.. Hardware is not my speciality, but if you ask me:
First, I need to know what the blue screen says. Look for an error code or something like "Memory Dump" or something like that. Once i know that I can tell you what your issue is.
----
It could be a bad piece of memory. Try swapping out memory or if you have two pieces of memory in your computer, take one out and keep the other in (and swap the other if it continues to blue screen) and see if that helps. If it does, it's a memory problem.
----
You should ask Bestbuy what they did to diagnose it and come up with their theory. I think they think it's a virus, and being lazy bastards they are, they don't want to work on it so just want to format it and go Vista.
----
Boot up in Safemode (F6 or F8 at the start) and see if you can't get into windows that way. Make sure you choose "safe mode with networking capabilities" so you can get on the internet and download the software I mentioned in my first few posts in this thread about spy ware. Run those and that'll ensure you're clean for viruses.
Gimme some more detail about the blue screen and maybe I can pin point it out.

Hedgers, and Hiaburi: you can recover the data on the drives if it is still under warranty. Some company's have a thing where you pay a small fee and send the drive into them and they will remove the plates from the dead drive and copy the data to the new drive for you. I know this because i had the same problem as Hedgers so i sent it into WD and they fixed it for me, of course i paid about $150 but thats not bad to get a new drive and all your data back.

Allows you to preview the software before you buy. Has the ability to recover lost partitions.
http://www.google.com/search?q=Data+recovery+program
A broad search, might help you find what you need. ;)
My HDD crashed a while back and as a noob, I formatted and lost everything. Almost any drive that has not been physically damaged can be recovered via software. Unlike sending the drive out, it's a one time fee, and you can use the programs again if the need arises.

I had a hard drive that would show on the device manager, but would not read. I had to run Scan Disk on it, and it found that the boot sector on it was fragged. The scan disk repaired it, so that the computer could see that it was a formatted drive. Hope that helps with the drive Hiaburi.

I have noticed that a few of u are having Hard drive problems. Here are some tips:
If a clicking noise is heard from HD, it means one of several things
1. The hard drive had had a "head crash" (where the read heads have impacted onto the platter) - Data recovery on this is very difficalt, ussually u need to replace the heads and acctuator arm. this proceadure is very expensive and can only be done by qualified engineers.
2. The head is strugling to read corrupt data - data recovery is easier and can be done thru software, as long as u put a heatsink (with fan) onto the drive, where the acctuator arm is located. However it is very time consuming and (depending on the size of the drive) can take up to 2weeks to recover data.
3. The controller on the drive cannot read the "Acctuator Servo Data" and therefore the head does not now where anything is on the drive - this is the most expensive proceadure - it requires the drive to be "re-carved" with the ASD (W13.asd.sys) data - Re carving is where the platters are removed and the disk going into a laith (not a mechanical one) but one designed to re write the data onto the very first area of the drive - this process can take u to 2 months, depending on the size and number of platters. WARNING all data will be lost and will not be recoverable if the carving process is unsuccessful.
hope this helps.
P.S i used to work for Western Digital - and was involved in data recovery

Hmm, might as well.
I've been having a problem with my new-ish computer for a while now. The msinfo32 System Information program is unable to find the file that shows the computer's information, and even the system things in the control panel won't report things like processor, RAM, etc. The Microsoft knowledgebase just said to make sure 3 services are running, and they are, so unless i misunderstood that, I have no idea what's going on. ;p
I really don't wanna have to reformat the thing just to fix something so trivial. If that's the only way to fix it, then I guess it'll just stay messed up. =p
EDIT: The actual message it shows is:

you could try running a check disk - either thru windows or the recovery console.
Insert the Windows Disc and boot from cd
when propted in the setup select R at the first screen- recovery console
if no password just press enter
select the partition with windows on (ussually C:/)
type - chkdsk /p
this will run a check and repair any missing coponants
when complete - reboot

*pads in and sits, looking at the image* Meh... I assume you're referring to the lack of what I would call "character" in the page... the images of the tabs and buttons. *scratches head*
Frankly, I've run through all the settings in IE7 that I could think and can't get it to display like yours. The only thing I would suggest is uninstalling IE (from the Add-Remove Programs Control Panel) and try using IE6. If it works, reinstall IE7... it's either a "critical" or "recommended" update that should download automatically from Microsoft Update. If IE still displays improperly after reinstalling, either try and live with it, or get another browser.
I really don't know what to suggest to actually fix the problem other than looking on the Microsoft Knowledge Base, though I'm not sure what I'd search for. *shrugs* Sorry I'm not of more help. I prefer FireFox myself... originally because it offered tabs and is a smaller target for attack, and also because it offers spell checking... *grins* gotta love that feature for forums.

I would go with firefox as well, for some reason, IE7 doesn't always like to play nice with XP. Besides, IE is bloated, I mean firefox is some now, but IE is still much more resource intensive.
Something that might be causing that problem which is no way related to IE at all. Are you running any web-optimizers? They may make your internet run faster, but they do so by reducing the quality of or removing web content.
Also you might want to check your character encoding options, try setting them all to automatic or unicode.
Something else you might consider doing is sending a long ranting email to microsoft about how much they suck. It won't solve your problem, but I'm sure you'll feel less frustrated in the end.

Might as well ask this in here. I'm in need of a new security suite for my computer. I've been using Norton IS '07 for the past year and IS '06 before that. My subscription ends at the end of the month and instead of using Norton again I'd like to hear a few suggestions. I tried reading through the review sites, but the official reviewers rate everything so close together, and all the user reviews are either 1/10 or 10/10. That doesn't help me. Ideally, I'd like one program that includes antivirus, antispyware, and a firewall.
And, just for the record, I haven't had a single problem using Norton, except that it's a resource hog.

A lot of people move to Trend Micro. It seems to be pretty good - That's what we use at work. Also it's not much of a resource hog at all.
A lot of the times, you really don't need one because Windows Firewall works decently.

*the blue fox pads up to the new fox and sits* Hello... *smiles, offering a paw* name's Fox... *smiles* always nice to see a new fur.
*plays with my tail as I listen to PyroPhaux's question* Honestly, I use little in the way of "internet security" software, per se. I do of course have an antivirus (Symantec Corporate Edition) that I keep up to date. The corporate edition is nice that it has few frills the home versions of Norton products do. I also leave the Windows Firewall running and don't have a third-party product for that.
In my opinion, besides that, what has helped me the most is using a web browser with a lower-profile than IE. Nothing for or against IE or Microsoft here... but they're a very big target, which is one reason I've stuck with Firefox. I am sure Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Safari and any other has its own security vulnerabilities, but they are simply not the target IE has become.
The other -very- important thing to do to protect yourself if you run Windows, is simply -not- to operate as an administrator. Keep an administrative account so you can install software and change system settings, but actually -use- a standard user account. If you do come across some malware or a virus, it has a limited amount of damage it can cause. If you have not done so already, make a second user account for this purpose.
*yawns* Meh... enough from me. If you'd like to discuss this more, I'm around... hope this helps. *shrugs, before turning and padding out of the clearing*

Thanks for the welcome and for the advice. For the record, I do use Windows XP Home and Firefox. I guess I could try using one of the free antivirus programs available along with the windows firewall.
Honestly, that's the first time I ever heard about not running windows in admin mode all the time. As I said before, I've never had any problems (on this computer) before, but that might just be from my overkill of security precautions.

Yeah! I forgot I should try to ask you guys about my problem.
I have a problem with my router. Actually I'm try to get my Wii to connect.
Let's start from the top. I connect a router about a week ago with an easylink connect. It's a linksys BEFW11S4 Ver 4. I called linksys but the people in India told me they don't provide service for it anymore and I'd have to pay them to get any help (something seems odd about that).
Ok, so it started to work for the first day. For whatever reason it stopped working. My computer ran slow for a while but acfter I reconnected it it was ok... but my Wii still wasn't connecting. I hadn't changed any settings so it can't be on Wii side (but maybe I missed something so...).
I tried setting up the network protocol manually instead of obtaining IP automatically. I have the IP address, subnet mask, gatweay, and the DNS. I enterd them in. Then the instructions are to type in the IP adress into a broswer window. It doesn't work. I get a blank page (and it's say "done" at the bottom as if it already loaded). I entered the IP adress after I changed the internet protocol back and finally was able to locate the linksys page with my IP address. Unfortunately, I tried to find instructions on what to do, but I suppose my model and whatever they're using now are quite a bit different because the instructions will not work.
Any suggestions. Byt the way, I have XP, if that info might help.
EDIT: Ok, I've got it working again. But feel free to write an answer just in case it happens again.

*scratches muzzle* Hmm... don't know about the "seek failed" error you're seeing. If you're worried about your disk, I would suggest running a utility such as SeaTools for DOS. It's a utility you can download from Seagate's website (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/) and create a bootable CD. The utility will work regardless of your disk manufacturer, completely free from the operating system and is free, so I would suggest anyfur with some knowledge of computers get it.
As for your video card issue, I would have checked in the BIOS for a setting, but it seems you've already done that. As stupid as this might sound... *paws head, chuckling* have you tried reseating the card? I've run into that problem a number of times where a fleck of lint had gotten into the connector or I had simply jarred it loose the slightest bit. Heck, I've seen unreliable systems magically cured by removing and reinserting the memory though they had been in from the manufacturer. *shrugs* It's worth a shot.
If you're still having problems, see if you can find another computer to test the card in, even if you have to commandeer a friend's computer for an hour. That should tell you whether it's your computer or your card.
*smiles* Hope this helps... stop back by and let us know if you're able to fix the problem. Seeya round the forum... *turns and pads off into the brush*

*the fox pads up and sits, scratching his head at the message*
Oh... you probably mean RunDLL... erh... that is a command used for executing a specific part of a software library in your system. Your computer is probably trying to launch a piece of software that either no longer exists, such as if you uninstalled or deleted it, or if it's become broken or corrupt in some way.
My guess is that it's not a problem, more of a nuisance thing, but I have a suggestion to get rid of it. Just a minute... *pads off into the brush*
*a minute later, the fox pads back in, dragging a laptop by the power cord held in his teeth* Erh... okay, let's see... *flips open the laptop and runs a paw along the touch pad* Okay... click on "Start", go to "Run" and type "msconfig.exe" into the little window that opens and press Enter. This will open the Microsoft Configuration Utility... a nifty little application that allows you to choose a lot of startup options.
BE CAREFUL here... though you can always enable something again, there is a lot of stuff here you can really mess up if you don't know what you're doing and cause you a lot of headaches.
Okay... go to the Startup tab. You'll see a lot of items that are checked. You'll probably notice a rundll32.exe something or another. If it looks similar to the command listed in your error message, you might try unchecking it. When you're done, "Apply" and click "Okay" to close the window. You'll need to reboot. Hopefully the error will go away when you login again. After you reboot, you will notice a dialogue window that says that the utility has prevented startup items. Just check the little box to not show that message again and click Okay.
There's a lot of other junk that you can uncheck using the utility that might improve the performance of your computer, or that are simply unnecessary (such as QuickTime or Adobe Gamma Loader or RealPlayer...). This doesn't mean they won't be able to run, only that they won't start automatically. Only uncheck those you -know- that are unnecessary to the function of your system. If you'd like to play with the other items listed, uncheck them one at a time, rebooting in between. If you don't like what happens, turn them back on.
To return everything to it's original settings, on the first tab (General) simply check the "Normal Startup" option.
*flips laptop closed* Hope that helps... let me know what you find. Seeya round the forums... *pads to the edge of the clearing and stops* Oh... and for your other question, read-only means just that... read only. *chuckles, padding off into the brush, dragging the laptop behind by it's cord*

However, my driver that controls sound is no longer working... I can't get sound through the speakers or the plug-in for headphones. It's like my driver vanished, but when I go to reinstall it, it says the driver is still there.

*paws muzzle* Hmm... have you tried the headphone jack? It may be possible a connection to the speakers is loose. It's just a thought... laptops seem to develop loose connections much faster than regular desktop systems... for obvious reasons.
For drivers, I would try going to the Dell Support page (http://support.dell.com) and looking for the latest drivers using your Service Tag number printed on the bottom. You might also try going into the device manager and uninstalling the audio devices and letting Windows rediscover them, or pointing Windows directly to the unpackaged drivers.
If you still can't get the sound to work after reinstalling the drivers, you might also want to download the Dell Diagnostics disk. It is an ISO file that will allow you to burn a bootable CD. The disk will test your hardware and provide some limited assistance in diagnosing whether it is actually hardware related, or something with your system.
*smiles* If you'd like more help with this, let me know. It sounds like you're rather knowledgeable with computers, but please let me know if anything I said doesn't make sense. Thanks.

The error is a DELL specific error. it has something to do with the partitions on your drive and one is or is going bad. You can run check disk or a DELL utility with the Function key to repair the problem.
You'll have to ask how to do the function utility -- as I don't know how to do it. I am sure it's on DELL's website somewhere.

Find out what your service tag is. it's on the bottom of your laptop -- should be like 5ghkl81 or something like that.
Go to drivers & support for dell laptops (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs)
Put in your service tag there.
Go to the audio tab and download the latest driver. Make sure it's on your desktop.
Now you can do one of two things:
Either just double click what you downloaded and run it or do the more advanced way (more sure way to get your PC running):
Basic: Double click the icon on your desktop, run it, then reboot. See if it works.
Advanced:
Right click "My computer"
Go to Properties
Go to Hardware tab
Go to Device Manager
Go to the audio tab and right click on your audio device and uninstall it.
Reboot. Let the computer find your audio driver. Run the program then and see if your sound works (may need to reboot after running the driver program).

*paws head* Eh... in my opinion, Norton (Symantec) is one of the two primary anti-virus programmes out there, the other being McAfee. Either is a respectable utility, though I prefer the corporate version of Symantec which the university provides me. The home versions are likely just as good, but often come with more baggage than I care for.
The problem you're running into is really that the infected computer is trying to repair itself... if the virus already has embedded itself deeply enough it is difficult at best to remove from the same system, especially rebooting as often as you say. Unless you can identify the exact virus and download a utility that specifically targets it, you probably cannot remove it from the same system.
A solution would be to launch a bootable anti-virus utility from CD prior to Windows, or to place the disk as a secondary drive into another system with anti-virus already running. The second option poses the problem of possibly infecting the other computer. Either probably requires somefur with a little technical experience with computers.
One other possibility is that a simple shut down command is being initiated somewhere, maliciously or otherwise. You can stop this by going to "Start" and "Run", then typing "shutdown -a" to abort it. This may not be the case, but it's something easy to try.
*sighs* Honestly, if the system is too bad off, the best solution is to -completely- wipe the drive, including the boot sector, repartition, reformat and start from scratch.
Honestly, if you keep an anti-virus programme installed, keep it and Windows patched and up to date, and -not- login using an administrator account, you should be able to avoid most virus attacks on your system.
Sorry if I'm not of more help. Let us know what happens or if you need more help with this. *sighs* Stupid viruses and the people who make them... *lies down, grumbling under my breath*

Thanks blue fox just glad I got a response, I try to keep it up to date but now ive almost given up on it. I had my comp made by my friend so I don't have restore CDs is there someother way to start it from scratch?
Well... *sits and paws muzzle* for me, if I were to start from scratch, I would clean the entire disk... wipe out everything including the Master Boot Record... everything, as some viruses like to stick themselves there too, hiding outside the file system itself.
My preferred utility is diskpart (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300415/en-us), but you'll need a 32-bit environment from which to run it. For that I boot using a Vista version of WinPE... though I can't really suggest where to get it with a malfunctioning system. You might also find an old Windows 98 boot floppy and use the fdisk /mbr (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/69013/en-us) command.
Then, install Windows fresh from the disk. Check on the underside of your laptop. *paws my laptop over and points a claw at a small, official looking sticker* Many manufacturers place a sticker containing the Microsoft Windows license and product key on the laptop itself. This says you are licensed to install Windows on that machine. If you don't have the copy of Windows, you don't need to buy it again, though you may need to purchase the disk itself from the manufacturer. It won't likely work with any other copy of Windows... it's fairly specific.
Hope this helps. Erh... feel free to ask for more help if you need it.
Norton (Symantec) and McAfee are both resource hogs that slow down your computer and offer very little protection
Erh... *paws head* I'd have to disagree here. The anti-virus applications from Symantec are very good. I can't really speak for McAfee as I don't use it, but -any- anti-virus program worth its salt will take some resources just to scan files properly. What I don't like, however, are the system monitoring utilities Norton has offered in the past. Those -are- resources hogs and are unnecessary in my opinion. I would stick with the anti-virus package and avoid the other baggage.
*yawns, settling down on the ground beside the laptop* Meh... hope that helps too. *shrugs*

You don't need to format right away. You should probably try and run a few things first before you go and do that.
Download the following things and install them.
Adaware (from lavasoft)
ccleaner
Hijackthis
install ccleaner and adware, update adaware (do not run them yet).
reboot into safe mode (hit F6 of F8 depending on your puter)
once in safe mode, run adaware, then ccleaner (this will take a while).
once done with that, reboot back into regular mode and run Hijackthis and send me the logfile in a PM (it will make a logfile in a text file..send me the contents by copy/paste).
if you do not pm me, I will not see it.

Hello there. I was wondering as I can't remember, but is there a program one can use that can scan ones components to show what the connected items on a computer is, even if say, they don't seem to be working?
I installed windows 2000 on an old computer of mine, a HP Pavilion a420n and am trying to see if I can find drivers to allow it to have sound on Win2K. I am not too worried about internet, but would be cool just in case. I tried the two AC97 drivers included, but to no avail. I checked the HP homepage, but gives little info. I was sure there is some sort of program that can be used to scan the system. >.<

I had looked around on another furry forum I was on as I could have sworn someone told me of it, and sure enough that was it.
Seems the sound thingy is AC97 or something, but the "default" drivers built into Win2K don't allow it to work. O.o I tried a & b types and nothing. >.< Maybe it is a lost cause trying to get sound on it or something?

I've got a software developers issue, I'm pretty new to the whole programming seen and I'm having problems with an unresolved symbol when it goes to link the project and its really throwing me off.
If anyone on here knows anything about visual studios 2008 or just object oriented c++ development in general they would probably be very helpful. I'm including the header file for my class in the main source file, I don't know how it would even compile if it wasn't including the definitions properly, so this linker error is really confusing the bejesus out of me.
Any ways, just thought I'd ask here for the heck of it. Never know...

*pads up to the white tiger and sits, listening* Um... well, I'd try going back to the onboard sound card and seeing if the problem goes away. If it does, it doesn't necessarily mean it's the sound card... possibly a driver issue or even something remotely related, but it would be a start. *shrugs*
I've never played Audition myself, so I can't say anything specifically toward it. Do you see similar problems on other games or only that one? I haven't seen settings to allow you to choose your sound card type since old DOS games, but there might be an option such as 3D or surround or other such effects you could try disabling that might affect the game's performance.
*sighs* Sorry... not sure this helped at all. Do try removing the new card just to test things. It's at least a start in diagnosing the problem. *gets to my paws, shaking my fur out* Well... let me know what you find. I'll be around... *turns and pads off into the night*

The problem is I'm playing on a El Cheapo laptop with a whopping 389mb of ram. So other then the obvious solutions of buying a new system (Christmas can't come soon enough) is there ANY possible way I could squeeze a little better performance out of it? I think I remember hearing something about there being a program to use a flash drive as ram for XP (I know vista already has it).
Fox Bluetail Axon
July 16th, 2008, 12:56 AM
Well... *paws head* memory is certainly one of the best ways to improve performance from a hardware standpoint. One of the cheapest too... though I'm not aware of a way to let XP utilize a USB flash drive. Not saying it isn't possible, just haven't heard of one.
As for other options, there is usually a lot of unnecessary stuff running in the background that simply uses resources. Try using the Microsoft Configuration Utility to disable these from running at startup. Hang on a sec... *pads off into the brush. a minute later, reappears dragging a laptop into the clearing by the mouse cord, held in the fox's muzzle*
Okay... to get to the utility, you'll first need to be an administrator. Then... *paws the laptop open and turns it so the tiger can see* click Windows, Run and enter "msconfig" into the area. You'll be interested in the Startup tab. Each item represents something that loads automatically at login. Uncheck anything you don't think needs to run. You can always enable them again, and this won't prevent you from starting you computer. The worst you'll do is probably to prevent an HP application from loading that might keep you from printing or scanning. I wouldn't worry too much.
Once you're done, it will ask you to reboot. When the system comes up the first time after you use the tool, it will notify you it's disabled items. Check the little box that says not to show the message again and click okay.
*smiles* I really hope this helps. It certainly won't fix everything, but it should help speed up stuff some. I have another suggestion you can try if you like later, but it's small bit more complicated, so I'll just wait for now.. *gets to my paws and bends to nip the mouse cord* Lemme know what happens. *turns and pads off into the brush, dragging the laptop along*

*laughs, suddenly getting hugged* Heh... well, I'm glad that did help you some. It is a very useful utility. *shakes fur out and settled down on my paws, curling my tail around myself*
You half hit on what I was going to suggest next, and if you're familiar with your virtual ram (pagefile) then that will help considerably. Something I've found that helps some, though it may not always be noticeable, is to make your page file a static size... set the initial and maximum sizes to the same. Depending upon your hard drive, make this two or four gigs.
This will keep the page file from expanding and collapsing and further fragmenting itself and the hard disk. After you reboot, which is probably required depending on the original settings, go ahead and defrag the hard disk. This should place everything in order and may considerably speed things up for you. Since the hard disk is the slowest form of memory, anything that will improve access to the pagefile should help.
*smiles* I really hope this helps too. Those are my two main suggestions for improving performance on a computer unless you don't mind reformatting and starting from scratch. *yawns and lies down under a low pine to rest* See you later... zzz

im having an issue.
currently we have two comps because my roomie bought one when mine stopped working.
on the newer comp, there is a crossover mobo with SDRAM and an oldschool Vanta vidcard.
we are now almost broke and cant find 512MB RAM anywhere - please help.
the other issue is my baby.
i have been trying to restore her and everytime i do, i get one of three blue screens of death
one is blank, the second is pf or pn_list corrupt, and the third(and most common) is an IRQ Location error.
i have tried to change the harddrives, RAM(DDR400), power supply unit, vidcard, and even tried to run the mobo with the minimum parts required but no luck either way.
i have a suspition that my windows OS disk may be corrupt or incomplete(though i have used it before) due to the fact that the disk is pristine and unscratched.
the mobo is a Dragon SOYO KT600 Platinumum Ultra and as ye can see i have tried everything that i can think of, which is a lot as i repair computers as a hobby.
sry for being so long winded but if anyone can help it would be vastly appreciated.
ps - the OS that i use is Windows XP Pro Corporate/Teacher edition, which is why i didn't want to believe in a disk error :(
pps - i also am running 256MB RAM on the crossover mobo and would love some assistance in where to go to setup the pagefile and virtual ram as this comp needs it baddddddddly.

*pads up and sits, reviewing the problems listed* Eh... I'm not really sure I'm going to be of any use on the hardware... I'm going to defer to a more knowledgeable fur on that.
As for the restore of Windows, it may very well be a corrupt Windows disk, though I am curious just where you are receiving the blue screen. Is this during installation or when the system tries to start for the first time? It may help shed some light, though I'm at a loss if it is not the Windows disk itself.
Speaking of which... *tilts head and gives a sly grin* I don't suppose you are using your Corporate/Teacher edition properly according to contract? *laughs* No worries. If you have a proper license key, I may be able to find a compatible copy. I work at a university.
As for virtual ram, *smiles* I do know about that a little. You'll need to visit your System Control Panel. Go to the Advanced tab and click the Settings button under Performance to open a new dialogue window. Under that Advanced tab, you will find a section for Virtual memory with a Change button to open yet another dialogue window. Select the drive you want and adjust the settings to your liking.
In my opinion, a static sized page file is best. Make it large enough it will handle what you need and set the Initial and Maximum to the same values. This will prevent it from growing and contracting since that can cause fragmentation of the pagefile and volume itself.
Well... *gets to my paws* I hope that helps. Let me know if there is anything else... hopefully somefur will be able to lend a paw on the rest of your problem. *turns to leave* Seeya... *disappears into the brush*

One of the computers on my network refuses to talk to the others. All are running the same OS (Linux Kernal 2.6.4x). I have already tried replacing cablig on the offending computer as well as rewiring to give it's own switchport. It is 1 of about 4 compuiters in the setup that has 2 local addresses (1 for wired, 1 for wireless). Only thing left I can think of is to install a new NIC but the one on the board checks out fien under diagnostics. Any advice on fixing this situation? It's the primary gaming computer in my network so I really really need it to connect.
I should note btw that the wirless NIC and onnection works fine, just not the wired. Howver for security reasons there is no communication allowed between computers over the wireless so I can't use this to interconnect (asie from the crappy bandwith since I am not putting out the cash for N routers)

This is an interesting problem. I personally don't know a lot about linux... wish I could give you a hand though. I set static IPs in my place and make sure my router filter's out MAC addresses. It's clean and efficient. Try starting all over and making sure that yer router is manufactureredly restarted. Set Static IPs for all computers and DMZ your gaming puter (since most games require some sort of port to be open).
Have you tried hardwiring all of them?
Thanks to anyone in advance for helping

How exactly do you need them to connect to each other?
Are you able to ping them?

A few bits of information would help with regard to your computer issue with Linux, Followfox.
Firstly: What Brand of Linux do you use? Ubuntu, Debian, Mandriva, SuSE, Slackware. Gentoo or something else? Also, what release name or year?
Second: Could you tell me what type of network DHCP you have installed? DHCPCD, DHCP, DHCPXD, UDHCPD or something else?
Thirdly: Have you tried updating your kernels? Some of the older 2.6 kernels were notoriously annoying for network config.
I know at least, the newest Kernel for My OS, Mandriva 2008.0 is 2.6.22.19-desktop686_1GB - so a 2.6.4x kernel is likely to be pretty old.

yes i have actually, i have tried 5 different IDE harddrives, as well as 2 different SATA drives, none of which worked.
the place we took it in too managed to install windows just fine on one of the harddrives that i had tried so thats why i think it is the disk.
they also ran it through a hardware diagnostic, and with the exc eption of the dead on board NIC and soundcards, everything works just fine.
i have downloaded a copy of corporate that i will use my key with and just hope that it works, as my keys are legal, plus its always good to have a backup copy handy, i just dont know which program to use to burn it properly.
the last backup that i made off my original disk(which was stolen bout three months back) was made using alcohol 120 full version, and i have yet to find a successful burning copy of alcohol 120 since then as they changed everything.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, I run regular updates so I know my kernal is current. I'm using DHCP. I have perfect internet connectivity on the computer just not internetwork connectivity... It's really tripping me out. I'm about to try replacing the NIC because I suspect that the one on the board is busated in some way.a I just need the money to buy a new one...

Howdy peoples. I just need a recommendation for a good free anti-virus program.

If you're going for free, check out AVG.

Just thought I'd add, if anyone else is looking for a good anti virus Avast! offers a good complete free program where AVG is just a sample of the full thing.

Thank you for trying to best me after making a suggestion to you. Also, the free AVG is not a sample, it's more of a version slightly basic from the one you'd pay for, just like most free antiviruses.

I wasn't trying to best you. When I looked up the AVG AV program on google all I could find for it was a very basic package that has something to help prevent future spyware. The Avast! thing I found is a full fledged AV that gives you a key to unlock the full program as long as you promise to use it just for your PC. It's got a virus scanner, e mail protection and everything else. Simply trying to help other people who might need some AV as well.

I let my sister use my computer once and when she got done with it it was completely FUBAR. Bad enough to where I had to restore it to the factory settings and reinstall everything. Now, I thought doing this deleted everything I may have installed, but when I was running my virus scanner I noticed it was running through a lot of old files I thought were gone. So when I try to access my old account through my computer>documents and settings it says it's there but it says its not accessible. Is there any way for me to get at it?

yeah.. even after a reformat you can recover files thourhg the use of programs designed to do just that. There's a ton of file recovry options availble. Just make sure you buy one rather then download one cause most of the downloadable ones for windows are actually viruses...

Okay, lemme rephrase. I don't really wanna access em. It's mostly just some different game emulators and roms that I can download again easily enough. This little crappy laptop only has like 60gb of memory though, and if I remember right all my roms took up almost 12gb. So if it's still finding the files, does that mean those 12gb are still being used cause I want em back!

*paws muzzle* Hmm... sounds like the restore did a non-destructive restore... to a point anyway. My guess is that among other places, the files are floating around in your old profile. A new profile was probably created for you after you restored.
Take a look in the "System" Control Panel. Under the "Advanced" tab, click the "Settings" button for User Profiles. I would suggest keeping your current and possibly the local Administrator profile. Delete any older profiles you may have had.
You can also go in the "Documents and Settings" directory and see if there are any old profiles hanging around. Keep the local Administrator's profile, your current and the hidden profiles. If you are unsure which your current profile is, open the command prompt and type "set userprofile".
*scratches head* Trying to think if there's anything else I'd suggest. Usually wiping out any old profiles will do what you need, though there may be other files in the "Program Files" directory or temporary files strewn throughout the "Windows" directory. Probably want to clear "C:\Windows\Temp" and all .tmp files on the drive.
Another thing I'd suggest is, if you have to let someone else borrow your computer, create a new user account for them and make it a guest. That will protect your personal files, history and web favourites, give them a clean profile to work with, and keep them from musing stuff up too much since they have literally no privileges on the system.
Myself, I actually operate using a standard user account and reserve my administrative account for just that... administrative stuff... things I cannot do otherwise. I'm sure it's kept me out of trouble without me even being aware of it. Browsing the web is dangerous, especially with high profile browsers such as IE that are targeted by hackers.
Personally, I'd burn all my files to CD or DVD, blow the entire hard drive away and start from scratch with a clean install of Windows. You'd be amazed how well the system will work if you start from scratch.
*stretches and shakes out fur* Well... hope that helps some. Let us know if you need more help with anything. If I know it, I'll lend a paw... if I don't, I'm not going to pretend I know. *turns to leave* Seeya... I'll be around... *pads off into the brush*

I am pretty new to using Linux, so now I need some help with solving a problem in Ubuntu.
The problem is that I only get sound about every other time I boot. Sometimes I can't mount the disks too.
I tried a Linux Mint LiveCD, and got the same problems immediately.
Does someone know how to solve this?

you may be using an outdated kernel that is having driver troubles or an updated kernel that regressed your drivers... are you using grub to boot? If so what kernel deos it say Ubuntu si loading from? Have you tried downloading the updated firmware for any sound cards your using? You may have to extract the firmware for it to work properly.
About the disks mounting. Make sure that hey are covered in your fstab or mtab and that your mounting them as root. Ubuntu is picky about mounting media and generally requires that you either sudo mount or bring up a root shell by typing
sudo su -l root
and then mounting by typing
mount $DRIVE (where $DRIVE is the drive you would like to mount generally something like /dev/sdb)
by adding these drives to your fstab you can make sure that they mount automatically when you log in. Type
sudo $EDIT /etc/ftsab (where $EDIT is your favorite editor i.e. gedit, kate, vim, emacs)
Now add an entry to your fstab for the drives you want to mount, It should look something like this
/dev/sdb ext3 /mnt/sdb default 0 0 (I may have mixed up the ext3 and the /mnt/stb but you'll be able to tell waht order they go in from the other examples in fstab)
no sudo mount your drive and your ready to go.
If you have any other problems or questions feel free to PM or YIM me. Hope this helped :)

I seem to always have a problem with my router. But there a long history.
We bought a router linksys wireless WRT54GS. And we could only link computer wirelessly. So hooker it up to computer that was connected directly and then installed PCI card in the other. After a while we got it to work for a day or two. Everytime is stopped working I had disconnect it, we connect it, restart it and it'd work... for a day or two. So I stopped using it and just used their machine.
Eventually I needed my own connection. Since a wireless router wasn't working, I'd have to pay for a seperate connection in the house. So now I have my cable modem: Motorola SB5101 (surfboard). And I was thinking about using the router so I could connect my Wii. Problem is this modem decides to not work with ethernet. This is before I connected the router. I tried hooking it up through ethernet but it wasn't having it, I could only go by USB. The kinda screw things up with a router when that uses the ethernet cables.
Nevertheless I tried the router. In fact I have two routers, the one I mentioned above and an older BEFW11S4. Neither of which will work. Restarted it, reinstalled it: nothing.
I looked at tomato firmware but unfortunately it won't work on the routers I have. Mine is a later version.
Any help would be appreciated.

I do have a problem, with which aid in its resolution would be greatly appreciated.
It is not the first time I have suffered this particular thorn, but I would like to destroy it without obliterating the rest of my data.
Again.
Apparently, at some point, I seem to have picked up some form of bug. I am not certain whether it is a virus, spy/addware, or some queer bastardization of the two. In either case, it is definitely sucking down all of my computer's preformance - and how. Whenever I try to load something into Netscape, it fails to properly load. For example, I used to use Netscape for browsing DeviantArt, because...well, I hate IE and Firefox (which is what I have been reduced to using). But now, whenever I try to surf to DA, the pictures from the recently submitted field no longer properly fit the area. Moreover, text in Netscape seems to have been doubled, or even tripled, in size.
I decided to switch over to Internet Explorer first, which worked for a little while. But now, even IE is bugging out on me. So now I operate under Firefox, which works so far as text goes. I can post messages and read them in normal font sizes, but... I have now even begun to have issues as far as loading any kind of media (be it pictoral or video) in it.
Whatever I have, has also hijacked my desktop and desktop properties menu. I no longer have any of the tabs in the menu associated with changing my wallpaper. Additionally, this new wallpaper is designed to imitate a fake warning message. It says, "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer!" If it means anything, the particular spyware it references are Win32/adwdare.Virtumonde and Win32/PrivacyRemover.M64.
The last symptom I can think of is that, randomly, whenever I attempt to load a page in a net-browser, my page or tab will randomly be hijacked from me and sent to the following link; which I have edited so that it will not link itself (hopefully) to any site, preventing accidental clicking or from anything burrowing its way in from the outside. The changes I have made are fairly intuitive to undo; all I've changed are the protocol and acronym.
hxxp://bmf.avxp-2008.net/scanner/41aeae993418c96d32ebe8a4153f5866/6/mrs1
Oh, and, yes - I have run both Avast and Adaware. I even had Avast do several Boot-Time scans. But no matter how many objects I removed, this particular problem persists. Perhaps I should be running a specific program which I simply do not have?
I apologize in advance if this problem has already been discussed. I attempted to read through this thread, and to search the site as a whole, but came up with nothing. I would have given it a more extensive search, but, to exemplify the kinds of problems I am having, it took me ten minutes to read four pages of this thread alone.
I am not exaggerating.

Normally I hate getting computer advice fom other people since 99.99999999% of the time I sort it out myself. But I've never even seen this before. So as usual, Qwest (my ISP) died, went out for 45 mins, came back on for 2 mins, was dead for another half hour, then came back online. Was sorta slow for 15 mins after, then I restarted the modem and it was fine. I called them and the recording said they're experiencing a high volume of calls, and the internetz were out. So its not just me. So i didn't realise anything was wrong until I tried to login to Yahoo mail and it said it couldn't find the server (I use Firefox) on the login page. So I thought it was down or something until my mom tried to login to her bank and it couldn't find the server. So she yelled at me for screwing up the computer again (I do mess with it a lot lol) and told me to fix it. I tried a few other sites and figured out the problem was with https://. So i checked Firefox's settings for encryption/SSL whick were enabled/ok, and I tried IE which didn't work either. I looked at the router settings which were fine too, and I tried it on my server (lol I put Windows on it and use it as a desktop) and it actually worked on it so it's definatly not a problem with the DSL or router. I restarted the modem just in case, which didn't work. Oh and I killed Norton and other security and firewall stuff because they were slowing the computer down like all hell. Probably a bad idea not having security, but i'll put it back up when this is sorted out. So ya. I feel like a n00b. Help plz?

Ive had the same problem. It will pass after a hour. Just unplug the home router and the modem and let it sit for about a hour. Plug the router in first them the modem. The when it gets a connection on your computer go to your network connections and right-click and click on repair. Restart and you should be good.

I do have a problem, with which aid in its resolution would be greatly appreciated.
You need to run "Hijack This!" (http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html) Save the info into a text file and upload it here. That way we can take a look at it. ;)
Firefox 3 coupled with Noscript and Adblocker is the most secure way to browse. The problem you have with pictures could be a settings problem or an issue stemming from whatever infected your computer.
Go to Tools->Options->Content in Firefox 3 and make sure all the boxes are checked. Then click on the "exeptions" box next to the "load images" area and make sure there is nothing listed there.
Hope that works!!

What OS are you having problems with connecting to https:// ?
Also.. is it IE7?
Personally, what I would do:
Starts > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Restore back to an earlier date that your computer worked fine. It won't change any files, just .dlls mostly.
You should be good to go after that.
If that is not possible to do, then let me know I know of other ways to fix it.. But it's a little harder.
