"Polar bears probably don't have specific predator/prey instincts concerning dogs or people. Their regional species origins are different and the polar bear is the more ancient animal lacking instincts about the newer species humans and canines. Their actions and reactions would be entirely based on experiences... hence the diverse and unpredictable relationships with dogs or men. If a bear never had a bad experience with dogs it could have a friendly relationship if the dog was willing... and it wasn't particularly hungry."

A yellow sun descends across the aqua blue horizon. Her snout resting on the ice as she watches, snoozing sometimes, her belly full. She rolls on her back to drink in the last of the suns light . Serene blue skies welcome her her lolling ways, and she stretches out to take in the full effects of the last haze of the day.

It was becoming dark now and she sniffed the air, something unfamiliar was there. She stood up to head back to her snow cave where its protection and warmth would comfort her until morning.

She raised her head to sniff the air again, the scent was getting stronger. Her pace quickened as she stepped over the ice to her den. She reached the den but was still wary of the scent outside . She sat by the entrence of her small ice palace and watched.

She licked and scented herself. She enjoyed licking herself it invigorated her and put her in a playful mood.

that smell again, it's much stronger now

Meanwhile, out in the cold landscape, a lone wolf was wandering. He had been separated from his pack and was on the hunt for food - anything at this point. He stopped every few steps to gather strength, but it was not working at all. As it seemed he would be giving up, he saw a cave, and it looked like the perfect place to rest for the night before moving on again.

He smelt a strange scent in the air. Whenever he took a step forward, the smell became stronger. It was getting closer whatever it was. He looked a fair way ahead and saw the cave with its occupant sitting and watching.

The stray horse was absolutely confused and bedazzled. Being one of the most neurotic horses he had ever met (also being the only horse he had met in some time) he often lost himself and forgot where he was originally intending to go. Then again in a place as icy and cold as this often the only place to turn to was the place that was the warmest. Currently he was looking for a sheltered place to stay for the night when he saw what appeared to be a cave in the distance, the only problem was the wolf who was sniffing it. Stepping back he positioned himself behind the trees and watched.

She senced it, something was approaching. It wan't the scent of a seal or walrus. She slowly step out of her cave and looked around. In the distance she saw an object foreign to her. It looked weak, at any other time this would be food but her belly was full and she stood curious, watching as it came toward her. She sniffed the air once more, another smell. but it wsn't from the foreign objeect moving toward her . She instinctively became alert and a deep vibrating growl left her body as a warning to the approaching scent. She paced nervously outside her cave. Soon she would need to charge at this foriegn being, and she was ready

The urge to change into her human form was not yet upon her . She needed all her strength in case she had to fight this being . She clenched her teeth and growled again deeply. Her claws at the ready. This was her territory and hunting ground and she had to protect it.

The horse had begun to debate if he was the only herbavoir presence in this god forsaken hell-hole. A wolf in the distance and now something else was growling in that damn cave. He knew he should run, he knew he should get the hell out of there and never turn back, but something was stopping him. What it was he was unsure of, but he knew he should stay. Maybe the two would kill each other and he could pummel the weaker one under his hooves then sleep well that night in the cave, maybe not.

She looked toward the tree line and saw something move. Her human brain told her it was a horse . What is a horse doing way out here? she began to move towards it , but stopped suddenly when she realised that it would be frightened of a bear. She would have to change, maybe it wouldn't be so frightened of a human?

It happened in seconds, and her naked human form walked slowly carefully toward it.

'humans don't growl like that. That was most certainly a bear'. The horse had seriously begun to question the greens it had been eating lately. He must have been hallucinating, no way a human came from that cave when he clearly heard bear noises. Still, a human was less of a threat than a bear, and the wolf didn't look like it was going to harm anyone, hell, it looked like it was going to die before it got the chance.

He didn't back up, but he made no movements as the human came closer.

As she cautiously entertained the beautiful large creature with her gaze he stood and watched her intently. she stopped about three metres from him and crouched down onto the snow so as not to startle him. He looked cold and half starved and there seemed to be a nervousness in his eyes, like a hurt of some kind. She smiled at him, and began to speak to him soothingly.
" Hello , sweet stranger " she said in a soft voice. " It's okay I wont hurt you"
She rose up from her position and made her way towards him . He did not move and she began to stroke his cold smooth cheek . He let out a deep breath which filled the immediate air with hot misty steam . He lowered his head and she began to stroke his long but tattered mane.
"Follow me and I will give you shelter, otherwise the artic cold will kill you out here".
She thought that he seemed to understand what she was saying.

The wolf kept walking through the snow, and he heard a voice coming from within the trees. He walked closer and saw it was a naked human girl, with her soft voice talking slowly to a horse. "That's strange," he said to himself, with the cold getting to him now more than ever. He staggered on for a few more yards, then collapsed in the snow, in full view of the girl and horse. In several minutes he was shaking all over and was waiting to die from the cold.

Seeing how she had calmed the magnificant beast before her she heard a sound and turned to find a dark bundle in the snow. She left the horse and began to make her way cautiously across the tree line and snow . she recognised fur adn new something was wrong. She came upon the poor creature and croutched beside him, all of her fear gone, and pity overwhelming her . She nuzzled him as her long blonde hair fell softly over him. She recognised the state he was in she'd seen this before . why did all the other animals freeze when they came to this place? She didn't understand it.
She would have to change back to her bearself to help this wretched creature.

She stood over him now transformed. she scooped him up in her strong paws and held him close to her . She made her way back to the cave.

The wolf looked up and smiled weakly at the bear. "Y-Y-You c-c-changed..." he said, clearly remembering the female with long golden hair. "T-T-Thanks..." he said to her and fell asleep in her soft arms. He was thankful she had seen him, and was glad she would soon be taking the place of his long lost mother.

She looked down at him as she walked with a feeling of completness . A feeling she had never felt before. His wet cold body already warming against her deep white fur.

she came to her ice cave and gently placed him at the rear of it to stop the north winds reaching him through the cave entrance. . It was dark now and she must warm him further . She looked at him lying there her head saddled to the side, she didn't understand the feelings whelling up through her . All she knew was that she had the overwhelming desire of protecting this small grey thing lying so helpless before her. She layed close to him wrapping her front paws around him and pulling him into her.

The night deepened and she could hear his breathing becoming regular and she smiled to herself when she thought she heard a tiny snore. And he was dry now . She must go out and find him food.

The wolf was sleeping better than ever before and he'd heard the bear moving about in the cave. He hoped she wouldn't be long - he'd needed her warmth to keep him safe and comfy. He murred lightly, and rolled over on his back, and was sdreaming of how this transforming bear had saved him from near death and he felt the need to repay her kindness and love sometime soon. He was a sick wolf, but he knew that he'd get better soon, but he felt a need to stay with the bear and keep her company, because she must have been lonely before he showed up.

In the darkness while the wolf slept a lone figure crossed the horizon. The wind swept the tundra and chilled him to the bone. He snickered slightly at his own pun. With eyes full of caution and depseration, he heard the sound of the wind passing over a cave. Mustering the last of his strength, the young collie dashed towards it, eager for warmth.

She walked out of the cave to head toward her hunting ground and the seal she would catch for her small grey friend.
She turned and saw something running at her , she swung round and roared a deep threatening roar that echoed across the ice and landscape.
she turned back to her ice palace ready to protect it and it's new cargo of fur.

She stood fixed, her body stretching and growing in size intently and fiecely watching the thing pounding toward her!!!! she raised her front paws off the ice and stood almost 8 feet high and extending her body to ward off the creature with her massive size. She growled and roared and deeply grunted sending reverberations through the ice

The lone arctic wolf came out of her own cave, a good distance away from the bear and the others, and shook her long glossy white fur in the sun, she stretched a bit and then lightly trotted off in hunt of a meal. This white wolf prefered to live on her own instead of in a pack. The cold winds did not affect her, her fur was very thick, adapted for this harsh climate. The wolf felt like eating lightly so she ventured to the stream on the edge of her territory. A few fish would do nicely, she smiled slightly as she dipped her paw into the frigid water and caught a fish easily. She heard the threatening growl from the polar bear far off, but tried her best to ignore it. She was in her own territory and the bear wouldnt bother her here.

The collie froze in his tracks, clearly taken aback.
"Uh...hello?" he asked cautiously. He had a feeling that if he made a wrong move he'd be finished. He whined anxiously, waiting for a sign to tell him to run.

"Who comes to my territory?" she roared. She dropped back to all fours and pawed the ice and scraped it with her claws.
She realised then that the dog was whining and she felt her bristled coat relax as she calmed herself.

She swayed up to the dog and sniffed at him her great body dwarfing him as she stood looking down on him.

"Who are you? and what do you want?"

"Well madame bear, I'm not actually sure," he began explaining. "You see, I went out looking for a sheep and somehow ended up north o' the circle," he said with a shiver. He glanced about, peering behind the massive bear.
"Not that I'm against...er...non-traditional relationships, but why is there a wolf in your cave?" He shook the ice crystals off of his shaggy black and white coat.

She looked at him slyly what would a sheep be doing out here?

her massive form heaved a sigh , "come with me " she turned and walked back to the cave . now it would be three of them she'd have to feed.
"the wolf is ill and young ...........do not go near him, or I will make you into his dinner"
she glanced up towards her ice den and saw the small head peering out . Her heart jumped with the feelings she'd had when she found him .
"You may stay with us until you're strong enough to find your way.." she looked at the dog intently, "you owe me much dog, I could have killed you back there"

After the she-wolf ate, she decided to walk the edges of her territory, checking to make sure all was in order, and to possible re-establish some parts of the boarder. While she was at the edge that connected to the polar bears territory, she saw the bear leading a dog of some sort. "Odd" she said out loud "Why would a bear befriend a dog.." She shook her head in wonder. As she continued her rounds the polar bear and her met each others gazes, and she nodded respectfully the magnificent creature. The two had never spoken, and the two were not friends, but they had an unspoken respect towards one another.

"Thankee kindly, marm," he said with a nod of the head. "If I had a hat I'd be tippin' it to you." He followed her to the cave, lagging behind cautiously. He's have to play it quite carefully around this one. Suddenly he was distracted by the size of her paw prints and found himself jumping from print to print, trying unsuccessfully to land all for of his paws in one of hers.

Polar could smell the wolf beyond the ice mounds she looked toward her and stopped, putting herself between the dog and the wolf. She didn't need the dog getting any ideas of joining the wolf and packing against her. She stared back at the wolf then turned to go into her cave. The cub glad to see her, jumped around excitedly.........she ignored him and motioned to the dog to lie in one of the corners of the cave.

She was in a sullen mood now and swept the cub aside with her paw. He tumbled head over heels across the floor of the cave. And came at her again thinking it was a game. She growled deeply to warn him off.
"I'm going to find food , I will be back soon stay here and don't stray, lest you find youselves lost again." She hung her head, the memories returning to her, she left the cave.

She seem to have a knack for finding small things on the ice. . Like the human cub. She would never forget that day and from a distance she has watched him grow into a strong warrior . She often placed herself on the ice hills and watched the sleds go by. When they noticed her they would stop and stare at her talk amongst themselves and continue on their way.
As the years went by the human cub was sometimes with them and he would see her and try to run to her but was quickly grabbed by the older men and spirited away. It excited but also saddened her and she always felt the change come over her when she saw him.

As she walked toward the icy waters of Seal Bay the memories came flooding back to her.

There were shouts and calls in the early morning when she awoke . She stiffened and her hair bristled and she let out a soft gutteral growl readying herself for a fight.

Eventually the voices moved on and she relaxed thinking they had moved on. But another sound bristled her and she went from the cave to investigate . She sniffed the air and causiously moved toward the thing lying sitting on the ice .

It was a human cub, a very small human cub. He was crying and his large asiatic eyes looked to her pleadingly. His tiny hand reaching out to her as deep sobs racked his small body.
She new instinctively this cub was dangerous . She remembered the human camp set up yonder. The cub must have strayed from it she new to be in the vicinity of the cub would mean her death sentence.

She began to walk away but the crying became louder. She could not risk the cub lurring the warriors back to her territory. She walked back to the cub and laid with it. This seemed to work and the cub stopped crying and was quiet. He crawled over to her and snuggled into her fur and promptly fell asleep. She was stiff not knowing how to react to the touch of a human. but as the minutes passed she slackened her muscles. She could not stay out in the open much longer. The warriors would be back this way soon.

She picked up the sleeping toddler cub gently between her teeth and took him back to her cave. she placed him on the floor and wrapped herself around him. She new he couldn't stay here . she must get him back to his village and quickly.

The child stirred and began to wake . He looked around and saw the bears huge face beside him . He smiled and began to hit her snout palyfully. She was uncomfortable with that . It's what her own cub did before the spirits took it away not two weeks before.

The child whimpered and searched her fur finding where food could be. he found her nipple and began to drink. The bear lay there allowing him his sustenance ............at least it stopped the hitting of her snout.

She had made the desicion to take the child back to his tribe.
He was able to walk but he was slow, she would carry him most of the way.
she stood at he top of the snow hills and looked down into the village . it was very quiet .............they were probably all out looking for the cub.
She gingerly walked toward it with the child between her jaws.

Suddenly there was a scream ...........an old she human was outside her igloo watching the bear with the child in it's mouth. an older man human came racing out of another .

She stood motionless knowing that any move at all would mean death.
She placed the child on the ice and began to turn.

Next all she knew was a searing pain through her hind leg. She swung around violently to see what is was . She roared heavily and swiped at the spear protruding from her rump. As she fell to the ice she distinctly saw a man running toward her waving his arms and shouting. She was in excruciating pain and already exhausted from the treck she had come to get here.

He stood between her and the warriors. He was their medicine man and he spoke to them sternly .
"The spirit of the she bear has looked upon you kindly and this is how you repay the great spirit? Has she not returned your child to you ? Ignorant fools " He was shouting and angry at them.

As he finished speaking she lost consciousness.

When next she woke she had a strange feeling about her and the medicine man was standing over her . When he spoke she understood him perfectly.

"She Bear you have come to us in friendship, the great spirit has allowed me to make sure we will recognise you in future. He has given you human form, so the ignorant man will not bother you again, nor will he venture to your home. Your wounds are healed you may go"

She stood up almost in a trance adn she did not recognise her own body . She made her way to the entrance of the human cave ready to flee.

At the site of her the tribesman and villages gasped. The women hid their eyes and the men hung their heads . She saw the child and he smiled at her, he clapped his hands excitedly and then reached out to her.
His mother now knowing he had the great bear spirit within him, picked him up and ran with him back to the igloo.

She had no memory of her return to her own territory and hunting grounds. It was like a dream of some kind . But it wasn't. Because from that day her body changed whenever human desire was needed and when she came across humans. Although they had stopped coming across the tundra onto her territory a long time ago.

She had reached the site of the seal hunting ground . She sat beside a seal breathing hole and waited.

The collie dutifully stayed behind and watched the wolf. He quickly grew bored. He wanted to play, but remembered the bears orders. And her claws.

So he sat and waited, watching the creature's breathing. Waiting and watching were what he was bred to do, although usually he was watching for wolves, not over them.

Hours later she returned dragging a bloodied seal between her teeth.
She placed it outside the den and told her two visitors to go feed.
she stroked the head of the cub as he lept past her to come back to her if he was still hungry and cold. She smiled warmly at him as he pounced toward the fresh kill.
Since she had become half human she'd been keeping the skins of the seals and laying them out around the cave she did not know why she did this.

She still had reservations about the dog but she thought the cub was young enough for the dog not to attack him. She watched them eat as she layed down and dozed on the pile seal furs .

The collie wasn't really sure what the etiquette in this situation was. He was certainly hungry, but thought it best to let the cub eat first. He was still wary of the bear, despite her begrudging hospitality. When the cub had eaten his fill, which didn't take long, he meandered back into the shelter of the back of the cave. The dog kept his head low and peered about before skulking up to to partially eaten carcass. He ate slowly, keeping an eye on the large animal in the cave. He didn't fill himself, but ate until he was no longer hungry and backed away. He waited for a cue telling him what to do next.
