Loyal to the End

Couragous and loyal,
she hunts for her pack,
seeking to provide the life
that comes with a meal.

Alone she sets out,
her destination in mind.
A place not too far away,
where food is easy to find.

She slinks into the clearing,
all built up with mud.
Here she will hunt,
and find what she needs.

As she cautiously moves nearer,
She is seen, unknown to her.
She hears a bang, and then,
with a yelp, her shoulder is aflame.

Off she staggers, bleeding and shot,
one thought in her mind,
the pack, her home.

Her loyalty drives her forwards,
her life ending as she see's them,
safe and well,
SHe ended her life well.

The matriarhc of the family,
Leads the mournful howl,
asking the wolf Gods,
to look after her well.

Pawprints and memories

A grey shadow passes by,
Leaving just a memory.
A paw print in the snow,
Something to be cherished.

He hunts, hunts for his pack,
Them enslaved,
His heart filled with longing.
He gives no voice to this.

He carries on his lonely search,
Alone and weary by the day.
Leaving but pawprints,
But memories on the mind.

Finally he finds them,
Bound to man's will,
Sitting by his fire,
Unharmed and well.

Now he cries to them,
A sad voice in the dark.
His family answers with a growl,
They have turned from him.

Now alone, weary, and heartsore,
He leaves them be,
Never to be heard again,
Only pawprints and memories.

A single grey shadow.

Finding Myself

Again I see it, the misty shape in the trees,
and I call to it, begging for help, begging for my sanity.
I follow the misty shape, as it winds through the trees,
I try and catch up, never feeling in danger.

The shape falls away to reveal something small,
and I bend down to see what it is.
A wolf pup awaits me, the shape familiar
as I hold it, I see old eyes, full of wisdom

The pup yawns and I drop it,
and before my eyes it becomes the misty shape.
It bounds off and leaves me,
alone and lost in the trees and mist.

I sink down onto the hard uncompromising ground,
and sob, lost, alone and scared.
To be forgotten for all eternity.
Gradually my strength returns, and I carry on.

Hobbling and uncertain, I look for water,
and with a splash fall into an icey lake.
I stare down into the water and see,
see truly for the first time.

The wolf pup with old eyes,
the misty shape,
are all one and the same thing.
We are one.

Sorrow Howl (My favourite)

The howl of the wolf draws me,
draws me deep into my dreams again.
The wolf is waiting, waiting for my touch,
with my touch she will awaken, and devour my soul.

I go to her, drawn by the sorrow howl,
and cry uncryable tears, of sorrow.
Sorrow that such a creature is in pain,
and knowing I will disappear for her.

She calls to me, inviting me to share her life,
share it like she will now share mine,
She sleeps during daylight hours,
and her call is during the moonlight.

I go to her, drawn by the sorrowful howl,
and cry uncryable tears, of sorrow.
Sorrow that such a creature is in pain,
and knowing I will disappear for her.

I lower my hand above her finely sculptured head,
and look her in her eyes,
freely giving her my heart, my soul and my body,
so that she may run again.

I go to her, drawn by the sorrowful howl,
and cry uncryable tears, of sorrow.
Sorrow that such a creature is in pain,
and knowing I will disappear for her.

I touch her head, and feel the life ebb from me,
I hear the howl that has haunted my dreams,
and I hear that it also comes from my lips.
Finally we are not alone.
