They met beneath the starlit sky
the night was clean and pure
The minstrels fingers dancing o'er the strings
his voice a rumbling purr
She danced, maid otter, her steps keeping time
as the melody takes her away
That was how he first found her
from his place 'neath the flourishing tree
Fox, his armor black as velvet night
found his feet on the path her way
as the Black Hawk called his song with the Guitars lively twang
Fox betwixt the couple dancers passed ,
Ghosting to the lone Maid Otter, his palms and forehead slicked with sweat
The firelight glints within her eye as a new song begins to play
Their fingers twine
The music speeds
and they twirl beneath the stars
Amidst their laughter lighting sparks
and with the smell of new crushed grass
their cares are swept away.
the song winds down and with it their dance
to sit companiably and hear the next song play.
the night grows long and so they rise for one last dance.
before the walk a walk to the rivers glistening bank
not wanting to the nights enchantment to end
the hours pass and they return fox bringing fair otter to her camp
Lifting her o're the obstacles that block their path.
in token of parting he takes from his wrist a bracelet and affixes it to her own.
her grandmothers tent looms and in parting the kiss
through fox's being chimes a chord.
the hurts which no-one knows begin to shrink
his night-black armor softening beneath her velveteen hands
no longer to keep out the new but to invite in
he holds her in his arm. in a night that he will treasure
forevermore
